Outside Play

We enjoy the use of our own outside play spaces to the front and rear of the setting and encourage outdoor play as often as is practicable. This includes wet weather play where the children can splash freely in the muddy area or play games on the all-weather grass surface. Our gardens also have sheltered areas to provide adequate protection against extremes of hot, cold and wet weather. We observe and follow the national guidelines relating to appropriate times for children to be outside during hot weather spells.

Front Garden
The front garden provides opportunity for the children to observe people, vehicles, animals and aeroplanes as they pass by or fly over. Tall black railings, complemented by a low hedge keep the children safe but still affords them a good view of what's around them. In the Mud Kitchen they can use a variety of tools - all age-appropriate - to dig, bury and 'discover' to their heart's content. Our bamboo 'jungle dome' continues to grow, offering another enclosed play space and is popular for the children who wish to develop role play, mark making or to simply 'chill out'. The generous sized wooden playhouse complete with curtains and carpet opens up yet more oppportunites for the children to explore the world of make-believe and imitate life as they know it. Experiences in the front garden also include the planting of seeds and it is always a very exciting time when the first fruits, vegetables or flowers begin to grow!

Back Garden

In this second outside space the children have access to a wide range of resources and equipment to suit all ages and abilities. The children can role-play in the play house with tea-sets, pans and oven or burn off some energy on one of the scooters or ride-ons. The cosy area with its sofa and bean bags benefits from a corrugated shelter which means it can be enjoyed all year round and is great fun to sit under when it rains! Physical skills are supported and strengthened through a variety of activities from ball games to obstacle courses and children are encouraged to seek challenge and manage risks under the consistent supervision of dedicated staff. There is also the giant tractor tyre which has proven to be a very popular element of this outside area. Wall mounted chalk boards provide opportunity for mark making and there is a fully equipped creative trolley which holds many other art and craft resources and is accessible to the children at all times. We have recently developed our Construction Site with realistic bricks and materials which open up yet more opportunities for discovery and creativity.

Both outside spaces can also be used as picnic areas and the children often enjoy their snacks and tea out in the fresh air.
